Our Bricklayers Sand is a very fine washed sand that is lighter in colour than most sands. This produces a smooth professional finish and can be easily coloured which is especially important if you are wanting lighter coloured mortar. Over time mortars weather and start to expose underlying sand colour. Most alternative sands are darker river sands that have small black aggregates while our sand is a light yellow consistent colour.

Our Bricklayers Sand comes from the upper North Island East Coast. It is the first choice for brickwork, where the finished look of the mortar is important. If you are doing block work where the aesthetic look of the mortar is not vital, then 2mm river sand is just fine – it is also the cheapest option for making mortar.

Please note that Bricklayers sand is the most expensive of the 3 options while 2mm river sand is the cheapest. The difference is the Bricklayers Sand is lighter in colour and retains it colour longest while the 2mm river sand isn’t as smooth and is darker and as the mortar weathers it will become more grainy and will darken over time if exposed to the elements.
